Cherupayar curry for puttu (Serves 4)

Cherupayar curry

Cherupayar/green gram 1 cup
Red onion 1 small, chopped
Garlic pods 2, crushed
Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
Mustard seeds ¼ tsp
Dry red chilly 2 nos
Coconut oil 2 tsp
Salt as needed
Curry leaves

To grind

Grated coconut ½ cup
Cumin seeds 1/8 tsp
Green chilly 2 small

Grind the above ingredients adding little water to a smooth paste. Set aside.


Pressure cook the cherupayar/green gram with 1 ½ cups water to 5-6 whistles. Switch off flame and allow the pressure to release by itself. Set aside.

Now heat a deep bottomed pan at medium heat and add the coconut oil. Splutter mustard seeds and dry red chilly. Next add the crushed garlic and chopped onions. Saute for 3-4 minutes and add the turmeric powder. Cook for a minute and add the cooked cherupayar/green gram along with the broth if any. Add the ground paste, curry leaves. Mix well and add water to the consistency you need. Adjust salt and bring to a boil. Switch off flame and serve with puttu Smile.
