Coconut chilly chutney/Mulaku chutney (Serves 4)

mulaku chutney

This chutney was something I always wanted to recreate for a very long time and after many trials and errors, this is atleast closest to what I have tasted 10 long years back while in college. We had a balettans thattukada near our hostel who was a lifesaver when it comes to kerala food in TN and he used to serve this with thattu dosa. He always knew what our order will be and later it became a routine that every tuesdays and fridays he will have dosa, mulaku chutney parcel by the time our college bus arrives at hostel, how sweet, isnt it? Hope you all will enjoy too…

1. Grated coconut 1 cup
    Shallots 3 nos, sliced
    Dry red chilly 4 nos
    Whole coriander seeds 1 TBSP
    Salt as needed
    Oil 1 tsp
2. Mustard seeds ½ tsp
    Curry leaves a few
    Dry red chilly 1
    Urad dal ½ tsp

  • Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and roast whole coriander seeds, dry red chilly and shallots for 5-7 minutes or until the coriander seeds are lightly browned.
  • Transfer this to a blender cup, and powder. Add the grated coconut and salt. Add a few TBSPs of water (I added about 4 TBSP)and grind to a smooth paste. Transfer to a serving bowl.
  • Now in another pan heat 1 tsp oil and splutter mustard seeds, followed by dry red chilly, urad dal and curry leaves. Pour this over the chutney, mix well and enjoy with dosa, idli or even rice!
